| <<Original UD photos, 3/3/04 >> | In 1995, The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation required Key Span Energy to clean up and remove all contaminants from the 16 acres site and an adjacent 3,000 plus foot stretch of the Coney Island Creek. The first phase of the mitigation requires the dredging of contaminants from the creek bed, installation of a protective wall along the creek to prevent further leaching of pollutants, and replacement of the creek bed with clean sand. The second remedial phase involves cleaning up the entire site, including the removal of several foot-thick layer of soil that will be replaced with clean fill. "It is during this phase that the marsh could constructed. The clean fill could be used to create the environment for the new wetland refuge"- ( - Charles Denson -Coney Island Creek Wildlife Refuge Proposal). Phase 3 - Requires dredging of a least of 3ft of contaminated sediment from Stillwell Ave Bridge to the mouth of the creek- Key Span began phase 1 of clean-up in November 2003. If you would like to obtain a copy of Charles Denson's visionary proposal for a wildlife refuge, email, urbandivers@urbandivers.org or crdenson@earthlink.org | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

The headwaters on the far left marks the point where the creek was filled- in during the turn of century attaching Coney "Island" to the mainland of Brooklyn. The tunnel supposedly drains from Sheepshead bay. | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
