NATIONAL ESTUARIES DAY 2004- SEPT 25th thru Oct 3rd.

Sept 25th, 11am- 5PM- Celebrate The GOWANUS CANAL, rendez vous at 2nd and Bond, F, G to Carroll Station, left of Smith, rt on second to the water.

  • Guided ecocruises aboard UDECs monitoring vessel " CleanWater" and "Gowanus Monitor"- Tours of Gowanus Canal, Gowanus Bay, Eerie Basin. Receive a fresh perspective on the history and ecology of the Gowanus Canal. Participate in fun and hands-on scientific investigations to check the health of the estuary. View what lives and lurks beneath the little estaury that flows in Brooklyn via live underwater video transmission. FREE. Advance Registration is required.
  • On shore water quality sampling workshops.
  • Live from Beneath The Estuary
  • Paddle cruises with The Dredgers Canoe Club. Pick up a copy of their map of the Gowanus.
  • Distribution of UDEC's Artful Booklet Gowanus Canal... a little estuary that flows in Brooklyn, and Creatures and Features Postcards.
  • Environmental Remediation Exhibits
  • Food, Bevs and Infotainment and more.

  • Tours of the 3rd Annual Submerge Art and Environment Festival Exhibits- exhibiting nine award winning photographers, a dozen videos from the Submerge Collection that can be viewed on demand from two video stations, environmental remediation exhibits " what can we do with our contaminated sediments", Aquinda Vs Texaco/Chevron"- Indigenous Peoples of the rainforest of Ecuador fight oil moguls for 30 yrs destruction of their rain forest and local estuaries.

2003 Schedule: From SAT SEPT 20th- The Urban Divers' Submerge Festival Exhibit at The Lackawanna Caboose Historic Train @ Pier 63. Photography Exhibit and Video Installation celebrating our fragile aquatic environments. 10 exhibiting Photographers, including a presentation of a video work and progress by The Urban Divers- " Creatures and Features of NY/NJHarbor Estuary". Pier 63, 23rd St and 12 Ave, Manhattan. Exhibit runs From Sept 9th thru Oct 25th. Closing Reception:Oct 25th, 4PM (To be confirmed)Live underwater video installation with The Urban Divers at the Frying Pan. Gallery Hrs: Mon thru Sun, 12pm-7PM. SAT SEPT 20th in Elizabeth NJ with Future City Inc,and The City of Elizabeth to Re-Discover The Elizabeth River and The Arthur Kill. Outdoor festivities , and a guided Eco-Cruise to the Elizabeth River on "The Monitor"- Learn about the need to restore and revitalize this estuary. Hands-on water quality sampling, discussions on the present ,past and future of the River- all on the Monitor. Later that day, includes a special presentation of Live From the Bottom of the Estuary- UD's underwater photographers and scientific divers transmit live images from the Bottom of the Estuary. Audience will have the opportunity to engage in a Q/A with submerged divers. Opportunity to View what lives in the Arthur Kill.Army Corp of Engineers' vessel will also be on hand for an educational tour on dredging activities on the Arthur Kill. This event is made possible with additional support from Project AWARE, The City of Elizabeth and www.futurecitynj.org

SUNDAY SEPT 21st, from 12 Noon- on the Coney Island Creek, returning with community NIO, Community Board #13, local press, and other community members. Re-Discover and learn about this estuary. UD video crew will be on hand to document the creek and the voices of concern from the community about the need to restore this estuary.

SATURDAY SEPT 27th - Discover NY/NJ Harbor's Hidden Estuaries- Join us on a special guided tour to Re-Discover Brooklyn Harbor's first two historical settlements along the NY Harbor Estuary- The Gowanus Canal and The Newtown Creek, including a special guided tour of the Bushwick Inlet ( with community org) . Hands-on water quality sampling, fish trap monitoring. Learn about what lives in these resilient waterways. View an underwater video presentation. All aboard The Urban Divers monitoring vessel The Monitor. (RAIN DATE SUN SEPT 28th)

b) GUIDED ECO-CRUISES on NEWTOWN CREEK, BUSWICK INLET- ( on The MONITOR NY) BEGINS at 2PM. Gathering at Manhattan Ave, waterfront lot. Gathering from 11 am. First come, First Serve.
